Group Rates Ministries' Financial Openness
From the Charisma News Service

Supporters of Christian ministries have a new guide to help them in their giving. Wall Watchers, an independent Charlotte, NC- based ministry, is giving "transparency grades" to several hundred of the country's largest Christian charities.

At its ministrywatch.com web site, the financial watchdog gives an A through F rating based on how responsive each group is to requests for financial information. Seventy four percent of the 400-plus organizations in the database have received an A or B rating and less than 8 percent earned an F.

"One of the greatest barriers to giving is that there is rarely sufficient information available about an organization for donors to make informed, confident giving decisions," said Wall Watchers founder Rusty Leonard, a former mutual fund manager. "The transparency grade will help to indicate which groups are committed to providing this information and hopefully spur others toward providing donors with greater amounts of information to learn about them and their programs."

The largest group in the Wall Watchers file, World Vision with an annual revenue of $408 million, receives an A rating, while second place Campus Crusade for Christ receives a B. Trinity Broadcasting Network, the fifth largest ministry in the database, scores a C.
